Program Terminated

This program had been around for more than 15 years. It allowed K-6 students who were identified as gifted to learn the basics of Russian conversation and vocabulary. The continuation of the Russian component was contingent upon budget issues for AY 2011-12.

k-8 are all year level 1. The +190 represents 6th graders in a 9-week exploratory rotation.
Russian I at the middle school level is a 2-year commitment (7th and 8th). After successful completion of the both years, 1 HS credit is awarded.

This is my first year here at STVM; I took over for the retiring Bill O-Neill. Our numbers are getting stronger and the program looks to be growing. The faculty and administration are very supportive about keeping and expanding the program.

Comment

Enrollment doubled this year and even more students have shown an interest for next year. Our school changed from block scheduling to a regular 6 period day this year. I think Russian qwould have had even more enrollment if not for the change(foreign language took the biggest hit in the loss of electives from student schedules). Outlook is uncertain for all our foreign language offerings next year due to budget cuts...
