The 11390 K-8 Students are distributed in two levels, as indicated above.
K-5: 63, 6-8: 27
The numbers are awfully low this year -- one of the obvious reasons why they are so low is that
AWL moved to a very old building in a a very rough neibourhood due to
the reconstruction. We are not going to move back to our area for the
next year and a half.
The other reason why the enrollment dropped is that there had to be a
dramatic change in the way languages are offered in AWL due to the cut
in budget. Now there's only one teacher per foreign language department
and students are offered much less FL classes a week.
But I am trying my best to keep the numbers and raise the Russian
language enrollment :-)

At the moment CAHS Russian and German programs
are hanging in the air. the principal did not allow
students to sign-up for Level I in either program
last year, therefore I have no students filling that
level for the first time in 29 years. What will
happen next year has not yet been decided.

Comment
Program is growing slowly. We had a very successful trip to Russia last spring (2005). Interest is growing. I like the new textbook and the multimedia approach to the exercises which requires a lot of student interaction both orally and with the written practice. I can tell Jerry Ervin has had his hand in this series which is excellent from a pedagogical perspective. He was GREAT for us teachers in Ohio in the "old" days from the Slavic Center at OSU. |
