Students in Brighton cannot elect to take Russian before grade 9. It is interesting to note that it now seems to be an appealing option to some students as an elective in grade 11 or 12 when they feel they have "had enough" of another foreign language and want a change. Also interesting to note that the number of heritage learners in the program has declined.

Some of my 7th graders receive credit for 1 year of NY State high school Russian if they pass an exam that is based on the NY State Proficiency exams. Some of my 8th graders get 2 years of high school credit if they pass the 2nd year test. Last year 4 8th graders received 3 years of credit by passing the 1992 Sample Russian Compentency Examination that was developed by NY State Ed as a pilot for Russian Regents exams. (The state stopped making the tests in 1992.)

The entire
kindergarden in the district takes Russian (approx. 500 children). : I use mostly teacher prepared materials, and have developed a communicative curriculum based on the New York State Regents Standards.
I have developed a program that is communicative, project oriented and student based. Please feel free to contact me for any information. Students are actively involved in many projects and special assignments, for example Russian 2 students have prepared and presented a puppet show using Snow White in Russian. |

UNIS has earned the reputation as the school for languages,
because of the range of languages offered, the program of study,
and
the caliber of its native language teachers, all of whom are
professional teachers in their countries and very often trained
also
as second language teachers.
A strong emphasis is placed on all of the communication skills
(listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as on functional
language within a cultural context. The teachers use all of
the latest
second language teaching techniques in their classrooms (audio
and
video tapes, films, magazines, Internet resources, storytelling,
skits, and dramatizations) to encourage active participation
from
their students. Teachers also develop good second language acquisition
study habits and skills in their students.
The program of study views proficiency in more than one second
language not merely as a tool for communication, but also as
an
important means of realizing the goal of world citizenship.
One of the
goals of the Modern Languages program is for students to gain
knowledge and understanding of another culture on "its
own terms," or
through the target language. We hope, too, that students will
become
life-long learners of culture and language. In order to meet
graduation requirements at UNIS, a student must have
four consecutive years of study on the high school level in
one of the
eight languages offered, or be able to join a language class
at the
high school level.
UNIS prepares students for the International Baccalaureate exams
at
three different levels: A1 or Mother Tongue, A2 or near-native
fluency, and B or second language.

I am so sorry to report that my school (Vestal CSD) has chosen to end its Russian program. I think the official reason was budget cuts.

I have been teaching Russian at West Babylon District for a number of years. The textbook I am using is called "Russian Face to Face", which, in my opinion, is getting old. I would like to find more authentic materials for teaching Russian to Elementary and Middle school american students of Russian, and use modern technologies (textbook with CDs, Smart Boards, etc.) while teaching Russian as a Foreign Language.
I would appreciate greatly if Russian teachers from other school districts share their professional knowledge and experiences. Thank you.
