I am interested in switching textbooks some day to "Live From Russia." Is anyone using this book for highschool? I am wondering how to set the pace. Also, we would need to be able to buy workbooks and replacement CDs/DVDs separately after the first year, since students may not keep the materials. As far as I know, everything is sold together in one packet. Are there any other textbooks that you would recommend for highschool students?

THE BIG SELL! Each year we are faced with parents and students who have no desire to take Russian because they know so little about it. During 8th grade orientation night at our school I personally speak with 15-18 groups of parents and students and introduce myself to them. I have 3 minutes to make my sell and so far I have had my numbers increase from one class of Russian I to three full sections of 30-32 students. We have to be business minded if our programs are to grow. I'd love to share my experiences with fellow teachers if there is such a chance. I'm best when I do things in person. You may think I'm being too outspoken but I have survived several attempts at being forced out and I am a survivor. Hope I can share my 20 some-odd years of experience with you.

We have been actively participating in the annual NJ Contest of Spoken Russian since 1996. Linden High School established a Chapter of Slava in 2008. At the present moment I think about cooperating with one of the high schools from Russia and starting to run an exchange program. Please let me know if you heard of any Russian school that is interested in establishing such a program.

Russian three and four are taught as a combination class. Students are nearly all heritage learners. In 2007 the Freehold Regional High School District offered Russian in five of our six high schools. It is uncertain if Russian 1 will continue to be offered.

Our school is an urban district. Lot of my students did not do well with other lang. teachers & their courses. I do the best I can with them, with alternate assignments, projects. etc. There's a lot on you-tube to use also. If you have any good ideas, etc. that you use in the classroom- contact me!
The students look forward &enjoy participating in the annual verbal Olympiada contest held at Drew University each spring

As our enrollment has increased, our district has hired a third Russian language teacher who teaches part time in addition to our 2 full time Russian teachers!! We have an excellent introductory program in our district which allows 5th & 6th graders to sample four languages for 2 marking periods each over a two year period - French and Spanish in 5th grade, German and Russian in 6th grade.   Every 6th grader in our middle school will go through the Russian program to get a very basic introduction to the Russian alphabet and language.   These students learn the upper and lower case letters in cursive, random vocabulary words, conversational phrases and vocabulary in line with various themes such as family, sports, colors, numbers, and animals.   In addition, the students are introduced to information about Russian culture and traditions.   At the end of their 6th grade year, each student must choose one of the four languages to study in 7th and 8th grade (a 1 and 1/2 year - level one course). Due to their exposure as 6th graders, many students become interested in this less-commonly taught language and decide to study Russian.   At the end of 8th grade, our students of Russian participate in the "Sparta Middle School Olympiada of Spoken Russian" (a spin off of the ACTR competition, which we are unable to compete in due to our HIGH numbers.) Many, if not most, of these students continue studying Russian at the high school level and are inducted into the Foreign Language National Honor Society during their high school careers.

They have changed our middle school program every year for the last 6 years. Next year we are finally going back to the way it was before they tried to "fix it" (over and over again). We will be reinstating our "Introduction to World Languages" cycle class where the 6th grade students will "try out" 4 languages (one per marking period) so that they may make a knowledgeable decision about which language to start studying full time in 7th grade. We've done everything from the Rosetta Stone program to showing pre-recorded videos to no program at all. Nothing works as well with 11 year old kids that good ole' teacher instruction. I expect to see our numbers increase in the coming years.
