(New e-mail address April '06)

I will be starting Russian III in Fall 2006. We will be using Russian Face to Face Book 2. I welcome any suggestions for supplementary materials. I'm looking for things that will interest high school juniors and seniors. I know they enjoy films. I'm also looking for Russian literature that would interest them. I want to make the course fun. My goal is to attract more students to the Russian program. I hope to add Russian IV in the near future.

Level I and II are for students who need a minimum of 2 years language requirement. We use Face to Face because it is easy and we add many additional materials like video skits, games, etc.

The third and fourth levels use Troika which gives a quick review of basics and adds more vocabulary and exercises written and oral.

We go out to the middle schools in Dec. and Jan. to sell our program because there are STILL many misconceptions. My best supporters are parents of former students. I ask parent to get the message out about our program. Unfortunately, guidance counselors use our program to unload students with learning disabilities because they know we take anyone who breathes and has a pulse to keep our enrollment numbers up. We lose a lot of students after the second year.

As our enrollment has increased, our district has hired a third Russian language teacher who teaches part time in addition to our 2 full time Russian teachers!! We have an excellent introductory program in our district which allows 5th & 6th graders to sample four languages for 2 marking periods each over a two year period - French and Spanish in 5th grade, German and Russian in 6th grade.   Every 6th grader in our middle school will go through the Russian program to get a very basic introduction to the Russian alphabet and language.   These students learn the upper and lower case letters in cursive, random vocabulary words, conversational phrases and vocabulary in line with various themes such as family, sports, colors, numbers, and animals.   In addition, the students are introduced to information about Russian culture and traditions.   At the end of their 6th grade year, each student must choose one of the four languages to study in 7th and 8th grade (a 1 and 1/2 year - level one course). Due to their exposure as 6th graders, many students become interested in this less-commonly taught language and decide to study Russian.   At the end of 8th grade, our students of Russian participate in the "Sparta Middle School Olympiada of Spoken Russian" (a spin off of the ACTR competition, which we are unable to compete in due to our HIGH numbers.) Many, if not most, of these students continue studying Russian at the high school level and are inducted into the Foreign Language National Honor Society during their high school careers.
