Though pleased with overall numbers, we took a huge hit in level 4 this year, with "singleton" AP Courses vs. Russian IV time-slot (and the well-orchestrated "push" to make seniors feel they're "incomplete" in the eyes of college admissions officers unless they have an AP-loaded schedule).

I teach five levels of Russian in 2.5 classes. In addition to
this teaching load, I have two beginning Spanish classes. Life is sweet
and very hectic. Russian I is all non-Russian speaking learners.
Russian 2-AP classes are typically composed entirely of Russian
home/native/heritage speaking learners who are at varying stages of
literacy in Russian.

Serdechnyi privet to my colleagues and to all supporters of the Russian programs, to all those who keep the teaching of Russian alive. NMH is the 4th school in my "American teaching career, and in 2 of those schools, very well established programs were cancelled because of "insufficient" enrollment numbers, or rather because of insufficient funds allocated to teaching foreign languages and to Russian in particular.
We all know that there are almost no Middle schools, where Russian is being taught, and hence no feeding schools for the few High schools where Russian classes are still available. This year, we attribute our very modest success of attracting 11 new freshmen to the Russian I class to the flyer, which we have sent in late spring to each and every freshmen before they started selecting courses for their first year at our school. In this flyer we gave a very short description of our program, but mostly we quoted our students describing their unique experience of studying Russian at our schools. Our little pole showed later that most of the students who opted for Russian decide to take it after reading this flyer. Now we are preparing for the next round of our battle for Russian. Please wish us success, as we are wishing all of you derzat i ne sdavatsya!
