In addition to teaching units of Russian, Japanese, German, Spanish, and French, we finished up a unit on African languages, e.g., Sawahili, Wolof, Yoruba, Hausa, Afrikaans, Luganda, Xhosa, and others in celebration of lingusitic diversity and black history.

Russian is one of five languages taught in the Study Alternative International Languages (SAIL) four-week summer day camp program, serving grades 2-10 of the Gary Community School Corporation. Myra G. Anderson is the coordinator of this program, not the Russian teacher. She hires new teachers each summer. In summer 2004, the teachers were Rovelli Grib and Elena Zoltova.

Numbers are low at first level. We offer Spanish, French and German at the Middle School, but all students take exploratory Spanish in 6th grade, so most of the good, focused students are already in Spanish when they get here. Also, the counselors there discourage the students from signing up for Russian, thinking it will be too hard for them. We also have Chinese and ASL, both of which are quite popular now. However, we do have our faithful few who take four years.
