Comment
This is the last year for Russian at Mather. Most of my students are Ukrainian or Bulgarian, so I am confronted with the usual heritage language issues. Plus, the level 3 & 4 students are doing readings, so if anyone has any suggestions about novels and short stories that work well with high school students, I would greatly appreciate them. |

The Beginner's Russian textbook is great!
At Noble Street, Russian 1 and 2 are compulsory for juniors and seniors. The program is still going strong! Most of our students are of Latino origin with Spanish as their first language. The courses are comprised equally of language, history and culture, so it's not quite as traditional as a more language-focused course that other high schools might offer. We also offer an extra-curricular 'Russian Club', where we go on outings around Chicago (museums, concerts, restaurants...etc.) and students are able to experience different aspects of the culture. This year will be Noble's second year competing in the Olympiada of Spoken Russian. |

All students are required to take two years of Russian during their junior and senior years. We are a non-selective public charter school, and as such, there is a lot of diverse learners in our classes. |

- Do not try and cover the entire book [either focus in depth on several chapters or pick the key info from all chapters]."
