I teach all levels in the same room at the same time. One techniques I'm using to get students to read aloud is to use a 1 1/2" PVC pipe with an elbow pipe on each end. They can hear themselves read without disturbing anyone. The hardest part is to get guidance counselors to sign students up for Russian.

Our program begins with Russian 1 in 7th grade at Smith Middle School. They continue through grade 12, when they take Russian 6 Advanced Placement. We use the Face to Face textbook off and on, but our curriculum also consists of many culture and history units developed by our teachers. In the spring of 2007 we began a new exchange program with the School for Global Education in St. Petersburg. This year we are celebrating 50 years of teaching Russian in Glastonbury. |

Our Russian program is holding steady. We offer a four-year program in Russian Grades 9-12. We combine students in 2 levels in one class. Thus, I teach Russian levels 1 and 3 in the one class period and Russian levels 2 and 4 in another class period. I meet with my Russian 4 students twice weekly after school.

Russian 1 is grade 7, Russian 2 is grade 8. Students continue on to Russian 3 at Glastonbury High School. We use Face to Face 1, but we also have many cultural units designed by the teachers. Smith Middle School was formerly known as Gideon Welles School. |
