This is a middle school program that is spread over two years. When students have completed both years, it is the equivalent of the first year of high school russian.
Gruening offers one Russian elective class every year-Russian 1A or 1B. The program is designed so that students take the normal Level 1 high school material, and learn it over two years at middle school. The students that start as 7th graders loop up with me to 8th grade.
My school has 635 total students. I teach one section of Russian. Because this class is for middle school students, Level 1 is divided into two years, 1A and 1B. They are then placed in the second or sometimes third year of Russian at the local high school.

I use a variety of readers and rely heavily on the Russnet materials for my advanced students. We desperately need low-level, high interest materials for our students at levels 1-2, such as the ones that are available readily for Spanish, French and Germ
I adopted the TPRS methodology after 25 years of teaching. It has made teaching three multilevel classes (I teach in two schools) much more reasonable. Using TPRS means that I can now use all the readers and textbooks I've collected over the years as resources, and I can differentiate for many learners in the same group. I hope that other Russian teachers using TPRS will connect with me.
In 2008 I began experimenting with TPRS. Comprehensible input methodology has helped me be able to gain access to reading with my students. It is solving many of the problems I experienced with having many levels in a single classroom. I will be able to report better on results in the next year and a half.
