Gruening offers one Russian elective class every year-Russian 1A or 1B. The program is designed so that students take the normal Level 1 high school material, and learn it over two years at middle school. The students that start as 7th graders loop up with me to 8th grade.

My school has 635 total students. I teach one section of Russian. Because this class is for middle school students, Level 1 is divided into two years, 1A and 1B. They are then placed in the second or sometimes third year of Russian at the local high school.

See entry for West High School. In this particular group, I have 14 "level 2," 2 "level 1" (who come from West High and are registered there), and two native speakers--one who doesn't speak and one who can't write. It's a fun mix!

This program is a continuation of Turnagain Elementary School's Russian Immersion and FLESS programs (MIR). MIR students are now in fourth grade, so in three years, we will need a continuation of the immersion program at seventh grade.

Anchorage Students Learning in Russian

By RACHEL D'ORO

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The littlest students at one Anchorage school are

learning their lessons in Russian, the complex tongue of Alaska's

former owner and a language increasingly important for improved international

relations.

Kindergartners and first-graders at Turnagain Elementary School attend

Two three-hour sessions a day - one in Russian, one in English - in a

Program described by foreign language experts as a first for a public school in

The    United States. (Beginning paragraphs of longer article.)

I would be interested in finding other teachers/classes who would like penpals.

Mix of native speakers, heritage learners and beginners. Classes also include 75-85% Native and Heritage Speakers.

Michelle Mitchell previously noted: "I have a Russian bilingual program with
native speakers from Russia and Ukraine. 30 are receiving services while we have over 60 Russian students in our school. In the mornings, I interpret for and support them
with their tests and homework explaining and instructing in Russian. In the afternoons, I teach them English.I am constantly getting students new to the U.S. "

I have adopted the TPRS methodology in this 25th year of teaching. It has made teaching three multilevel classes (I teach in two schools) much more reasonable. Using TPRS means that I can now use all the readers and textbooks I've collected over the years as resources, and I can differentiate for many learners in the same group. I hope that other Russian teachers using TPRS will connect with me.

In 2008 I began experimenting with TPRS. Comprehensible input methodology has helped me be able to gain access to reading with my students. It is solving many of the problems I experienced with having many levels in a single classroom. I will be able to report better on results in the next year and a half.
