The Anchorage School District received a FLAP grant beginning fall 2000 for three years to start Russian programs in three middle schools: Gruening(approx. 15 students), Romig (9), and Wendler (9). Two teachers, Natasha Clark and Michelle Foss, are serving the three schools. Contact Janice Gullickson < gullickson_janice@msmail.asd.k12.ak.us> for details (CCPCR has had no response from this e-mail address as yet, but it does receive e-mail.) These 3 schools will be posted individually when info is received: meanwhile, they are being added to the total count for Alaska.

We lost our high school program [at West Valley HS] in the fall of 2000, but there is
increased interest in the feeder schools. I have been teaching at Pearl Creek
for 2 years and Julia Kermes also started a program last year at Woodriver
Elem. Our classes both run about 15-18 students at each of the schools.

I have a Russian bilingual program with
native speakers from Russia and Ukraine. 33 are receiving
services while we have over 60 Russian students in our
school. In the mornings, I interpret for and support them
with their tests and homework explaining and instructing in
Russian. In the afternoons, I teach them English.I am
constantly getting students new to the U.S. Next year, we are
adding a Russian class as the demand is very high.

We're hoping to start a small AP group in Russian next year. We are also waiting to find out whether our school will be an IB program. If so, we will also be training students for the AB Initio Standard Level in Russian.
