We have been actively participating in the annual NJ Contest of Spoken Russian since 1996. Linden High School established a Chapter of Slava in 2008. At the present moment I think about cooperating with one of the high schools from Russia and starting to run an exchange program. Please let me know if you heard of any Russian school that is interested in establishing such a program.

Russian three and four are taught as a combination class. Students are nearly all heritage learners. In 2007 the Freehold Regional High School District offered Russian in five of our six high schools. It is uncertain if Russian 1 will continue to be offered.

Our program was ended 2 yrs.ago (2013) when I retired . It was my pleasure teaching Russian and German for 40 yrs, since 1973. Our program started in 1962 when our HS was opened with Mr.DeCesare, who had taught here many yrs.himself at North Betgen and was my Russian teacher, and also the Dept. Chair. He inspired me to study of Russian, which I continued atNYU and Middlebury College,where I got my MA in Russian, also having studied German at these two fine schools and also abroad! I enjoyed teaching both Russian and German at North Bergen, in addition to teaching some math there and at various summer schools in NJ.

Our introductory program was changed this year due to scheduling conflicts. Our 6th and 7th graders now take 2 marking periods of one language, then switch to another language for the second half of the year. Over the course of two years they will have had an introduction to all 4 languages (French, German, Spanish, Russian). In 6th & 7th grade, the language classes meet every other day for a total of approximately 45 sessions per semester/per language.
The students then choose to study one of the four languages in 8th grade on an every day basis.
